In the field of traditional medicine, as a leading Chinese Tibetan medicine brand, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is currently dedicated to the secondary development of classic Tibetan medicinal formulas, while also focusing on the systematic compilation of Tibetan medical experts’ experience, the research and exploration of ancient texts and time-honored prescriptions, and the study and development of in-house pharmaceutical preparations.
The Tibetan Medicine Engineering Technology Center of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, located in Lhasa, has dedicated researchers who are engaged in the systematic collation and exploration of classical Tibetan medical texts. Meanwhile, the center is vigorously promoting research and development in Tibetan medicine—including the creation of new Tibetan medicinal products, innovation in dosage forms, and enhancement of quality standards—through a variety of projects such as surveys of medicinal herb resources, statistical analysis of marketed Tibetan medicine formulations, research on Tibetan medicine DNA barcoding, and preliminary studies on young Tibetan medicinal plants. These efforts reflect Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s long-term R&D focus. Among these, “hospital-prepared formulations” refer to preparations developed by hospitals themselves. These formulations are created by hospital experts based on traditional prescriptions and have been clinically proven effective over an extended period. However, they do not carry the “National Drug Approval Number” and can only be used within the hospital itself; they cannot be sold on the market. If such hospital-prepared formulations are to enter the market, they must pass numerous rigorous stages—including pharmacological studies, toxicological evaluations, clinical trials, and compliance with national standards—and undergo the same approval process required for new drug applications. This process demands substantial time and financial resources, making it extremely challenging for most hospitals to afford.
Feng Ping, Vice President of Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd., told reporters that Tibetan medicine is an important component of China's traditional medicine and has accumulated a wealth of effective, safe, and cost-efficient prescriptions. In recent years, under the nation’s vigorous policy of promoting the development of ethnic medicines, Tibetan medicine has experienced rapid growth. Many prescriptions have been developed into proprietary medicines and are now being marketed nationwide. However, due to the relatively late start of Tibetan medicine development and weak research on the material basis of medicinal herbs, Tibetan medicine still lags behind in areas such as formulation technology, clinical research, basic experiments, and clinical promotion. As a result, many products that have undergone rigorous clinical verification, demonstrate excellent efficacy and safety, and are priced reasonably have found it difficult to meet the marketing requirements of the mainland pharmaceutical market. Consequently, many high-quality products have experienced sluggish sales growth, making it challenging for enterprises to develop, thereby significantly hindering the growth of the ethnic medicine industry.
“If we want to expand into new markets, the cost of transforming Tibetan medicine and pharmaceuticals is relatively high. First, we need to figure out how to get the general public to embrace Tibetan culture and accept Tibetan medicines,” Feng Ping said. “In addition, we need to enhance our market research—identifying which sectors hold potential opportunities and determining how we can adapt our products to seize those opportunities and enter the market. This is a fairly lengthy process.”
According to what our reporter has learned, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is currently the leading enterprise in China’s modern Tibetan medicine sector. Its products, such as the pain-relief plaster, have demonstrated remarkable efficacy and continue to enjoy strong sales in the market. As of the end of 2015, the company’s total assets amounted to 2.07 billion yuan.
