Gansu Formulas: Tibetan Medicine Prevention and Treatment Protocols Support COVID-19 Response

On December 10, the People's Government of Jiuquan City, Gansu Province, hosted an online video conference to present real-life case reports on the use of Tibetan medicine in treating COVID-19 at Gansu’s makeshift hospitals.

According to reports, on October 12, a medical team composed of Qizheng LinTao Tibetan Medicine Hospital and Lanzhou Tibetan Medicine Hospital moved into the Liugou Fangcang Hospital in Guazhou County, Jiuquan City. The team employed a sequential therapy that combines Fangcang Tibetan medicine treatments—such as Cuitang Granules, Influenza Pills, Renqing Mangjue, Ten-Flavor Gentian Flower, and Lung-Clearing & Cough-Relieving Pills—with post-recovery Tibetan medicines aimed at preventing relapse. Among the patients admitted, 43.78% were asymptomatic, while 56.21% presented with symptoms including cough, fatigue, dry throat, and sore throat. The first batch of patients who met the recovery criteria began leaving the facility on October 22, and by November 6, all patients had tested negative and been discharged.

It is understood that the “Real-World Observational Study on Tibetan Medicine Treatment for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia” is a special emergency research project approved by the Gansu Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2022. The study employs a sequential therapy involving cabin-based Tibetan medicine treatment followed by post-recovery Tibetan medicine to prevent relapse, with a treatment course lasting 14 days. At the meeting, Liu Borong, Deputy Director of the Gansu Provincial Health Commission, stated that the summary of the experience gained from applying the “Gansu Formula” for prevention and treatment has provided a reliable basis for safeguarding the health of the people.
