The Gansu Province Modernization Research Institute for Chinese Medicine Pharmaceutical Engineering was established on March 16. Following its establishment, the institute will undertake a variety of tasks, including the secondary development of major Chinese medicine products across the province, the development of hospital preparations and health foods, and focused research and technological breakthroughs. It will also enhance cultivation and processing technologies for authentic Chinese medicinal materials, explore ways to deeply develop and utilize these resources, and facilitate the transformation of the Chinese medicine industry from a “resource-rich province” to an “industry-leading province.” On the same day, the institute signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Dingxi Municipal Government.
Gansu is a major province rich in traditional Chinese medicinal herb resources. According to statistics, its area under artificial cultivation ranks third nationwide. Currently, there are 1,527 species of medicinal herbs cultivated in the province, of which 276 are designated as key national varieties, and more than 30 are renowned, high-quality, locally-produced medicinal materials. In 2013, the province’s pharmaceutical industry achieved main business revenues of just over 8 billion yuan, with a medicinal herb output of approximately 820,000 tons and an output value of only 10 billion yuan.
After its establishment, the institute will leverage the province’s abundant resources of traditional Chinese medicinal materials, focusing on the research and development of new products, new technologies, and new processes for these materials; the R&D and industrialization of Chinese medicine preparations; the study of quality standards for Chinese medicines; breakthroughs in key common technologies for the Chinese medicine industry; research on germplasm resources and cultivation and processing technologies for Chinese medicinal materials; and consulting and services in Chinese medicine pharmaceutical engineering. Gradually, the institute will evolve into a nationally leading research and development institution for modern Chinese medicine pharmaceutical engineering, integrating basic research, innovation in process technologies, commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, pilot-scale testing and experimental validation, high-level talent cultivation, and technical and engineering consulting services. Through dedicated efforts, the institute will accelerate the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, promote the rapid development of the Longyao industry, and play a pioneering and exemplary role in the modernization of Longyao.
