Yushu Rescue – We’re Doing Our Best, Part 12
Thank you very much for your help to the Yushu disaster area.
May 5, Sunny
After having breakfast in the morning, everyone got down to work according to the plan. We started by contacting the families who hadn't been able to pick up their supplies yesterday. As we listened to their heartfelt words of gratitude over the phone, our hearts felt warm and filled with joy. After finishing up with the more scattered households, we then reached out to several township government leaders from areas severely affected by the disaster to help them compile a list of families in need of assistance. Zhanan, the mayor of Sahuote Town, reported three single-parent and disabled households; the mayor of Angsai Township in Zaduo County reported ten single elderly and disabled households and had already prepared hardship certificates for them; village officials from Ganda Village in Jiegu Town selected 15 particularly impoverished households from among 248 households; and Maozhuang Township in Nangqian County also reported five such households. After thorough communication, we confirmed that we would gather at Jiegu Temple at 1:30 p.m. to distribute supplies to these families.
At 1:30 in the afternoon, households in need began arriving one after another to collect disaster relief supplies. During the distribution process, Laga, a household in need from Maozhuang Township, caught our attention. His family had once been a happy multi-generational household, but tragically, they lost three loved ones in the earthquake. Now, he and his young son, Dawa, are left to rely on each other for support. After receiving their supplies, Laga and his son didn't leave right away; instead, they approached us, asking for help with distributing the supplies and maintaining order. They even offered to use their borrowed van to deliver supplies to elderly, solitary individuals who couldn't make it to the distribution site. We politely declined their kind offer. As he was leaving, Laga repeatedly said, “If you ever need a vehicle for future distributions, just give me a call anytime—I’ll do my best to help. I’m truly grateful for all the assistance you’ve provided to the Yushu disaster area!”
In Laga’s simple and heartfelt words, genuine gratitude overflowed. This disaster relief effort has been filled with countless unforgettable and touching moments. Yet, compared to the help we’ve offered to the local people with all our compassion and sincerity, perhaps we ourselves have gained even more. Most precious of all is the spiritual growth this aid has brought us. Here, together with the local residents, we’ve experienced the impermanence of life’s cycles and learned to face reality with resilience. It’s here that we’ve truly come to appreciate the depth of gratitude within our hearts. The rain of kindness sown by everyone’s collective efforts hasn’t just nourished Yushu—it’s also made our own hearts bloom with green vitality, allowing us to witness the power of the heart itself. Thank you all so much.
With everyone working together in unison, the distribution of relief supplies went smoothly. A total of 92 households affected by severe hardship were provided with assistance, including 29 households under the Five Guarantees program, 3 households in Sahute Town, 10 households in Angsai Township, Zadoi County, 5 households in Maozhuang Township, Nangqian County, and 35 scattered households.
After everyone’s discussion, Ge Cuo will be in charge of tomorrow’s logistics. The rest of us will split into two groups and start visiting each village household from 8:30 a.m. to register families in extreme poverty. In the evening, the third batch of relief supplies will arrive. In the afternoon, we’ll need to finalize arrangements for the storage location and prepare for unloading the supplies. At the same time, we’ll handle the handover of supplies between the second and third batches.
