Qizheng Tibetan Medicine actively responds to the SDGs by launching an initiative for biodiversity conservation.

　　At the 13th International Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility of Chinese Enterprises held on June 6, Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd., in collaboration with WTO Economic Digest, launched a new initiative called the "Golden Bee Global CSR2030 Initiative," which focuses on the development of Tibetan medicine and the protection of biodiversity on the plateau, thereby promoting sustainable development in the fields of medicine, culture, economy, species, and the environment.

　　It is understood that Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is the first Chinese enterprise to respond to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal “Life on Land.” The “Golden Bee Global CSR 2030 Initiative,” officially launched in 2017, is China’s first initiative aimed at aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. To date, it has attracted the participation of 25 renowned enterprises and 2 institutions. The initiative seeks to build corporate competitiveness in responsibility through a shared commitment to responsible practices and innovative actions, fostering positive relationships between businesses and society, and achieving sustainable development for both enterprises and society. At the same time, it contributes to the implementation of China’s national plan for the Sustainable Development Agenda and helps advance the ultimate realization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

　　The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of China’s regions with the richest biodiversity. Tibetan medicinal herbs sourced from this plateau boast remarkable therapeutic effects and have played a vital role in safeguarding public health for thousands of years. However, along with the rapid development of the Tibetan medicine industry, there has emerged a trend of exploitative harvesting of certain Tibetan medicinal resources, leading to the gradual depletion of some medicinal resources and even placing them at risk of extinction. This poses serious challenges to the sustainable development of the Tibetan medicine industry.

　　Founded in 1995 in Linzhi, Tibet, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has now grown into a leading domestic enterprise specializing in modern Tibetan medicine. In 2017, the company reported operating revenues of 1.053 billion yuan and net profits of 301 million yuan. As a modern inheritor of millennia-old Tibetan medicinal traditions, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has initiated a campaign to raise awareness about the biodiversity of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and to build a business ecosystem that focuses on long-term benefits. From procurement and R&D to production, the company strives to utilize Tibetan medicinal resources efficiently, rationally, and sustainably. It recognizes the rights of indigenous communities to harness local ecological resources for their survival and development, actively engaging businesses in the eco-trade sector as well as local residents from the regions of origin. By doing so, it ensures sustainable sourcing at the place of origin, reduces overexploitation of wild medicinal resources, minimizes human-induced environmental damage, and creates conditions for both natural self-recovery and human-assisted ecological restoration. Through the protection and inheritance of Tibetan medical culture, while fostering the development of the Tibetan pharmaceutical industry, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is committed to safeguarding the biodiversity of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and ensuring the flourishing of cultural diversity rooted in this rich biological variety.

　　To achieve the goals of the initiative, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has also outlined a clear roadmap of actions, including conducting a comprehensive survey of Tibetan medicinal plant resources, promoting the establishment of a Tibetan medicinal plant germplasm resource bank, carrying out research on alternative sources for Tibetan medicinal materials, conducting studies on cultivation techniques for Tibetan medicinal plants in their native habitats, implementing sustainable harvesting practices in the places of origin of Tibetan medicinal materials, establishing wild-cultivation bases in high-altitude and cold regions where these plants naturally grow, facilitating the transition from wild to cultivated Tibetan medicinal plants in their places of origin, and actively engaging in the inheritance and protection of Tibetan medical culture—these constitute eight key initiatives.
