On October 31, the annual winners of the Ram Charan Management Practice Award—the “highest honor for management practice in China”—were announced. Thanks to the outstanding value of its case study, “Qizheng Tibetan Medicine: A Sustainable Business Model and Governance Practice,” Qizheng Tibetan Medicine was awarded the “Outstanding Award.”
The Ram Charan Management Practice Award is a non-profit recognition program jointly launched in 2017 by the Chinese edition of Harvard Business Review and world-class management consulting expert Mr. Ram Charan. The winning case of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine was researched and written by Professor Zhang Yanlong and his team from the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University. It systematically showcases Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s innovative approach to building and implementing sustainable business models and governance practices, providing a replicable and借鉴able development model for the traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine industries.
Throughout its history, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has consistently placed great importance on the conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. To date, the company has completed resource surveys on more than 120 Tibetan medicinal herb species, established standards for over 60 local Tibetan medicinal herbs, and conducted research on cultivation techniques for 58 Tibetan medicinal herb species. It has also built a four-tiered functional base system covering wild conservation, near-wild cultivation, research on artificial propagation of rare and endangered medicinal herbs, and industrial-scale cultivation, with a total area exceeding 500,000 mu.
Meanwhile, the company actively embraces the low-carbon philosophy, adopts high-standard green production practices, builds smart factories, and has established an environmental management system that covers all stages of the production process.
Relying on the Qizheng Foundation, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is preserving and promoting Tibetan medical culture through initiatives such as folk Tibetan medicine education and the “Hundred Clinics” program. By fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with stakeholders, Qizheng has built a commercial ecosystem characterized by symbiotic co-prosperity.
At the strategic planning level, the company has proposed the “Five-Tree Strategy” model, establishing a comprehensive, end-to-end framework spanning “disease—health—technology—product—brand.” This approach seamlessly integrates strategy with operational plans, laying a solid foundation for the realization of our future vision.
During the product development process, the company adheres to a “one-vote veto system at the R&D stage,” meaning that any product with market potential—provided it relies on endangered or scarce resources and has not yet completed resource planning—may not be launched as a strategic flagship product.
In terms of organizational succession and talent development, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is accelerating the rejuvenation of its organization, establishing a management foundation centered on modern corporate systems, ensuring that professional teams become the core driving force behind the company’s development, and attracting and cultivating specialized talents across various fields.
This award also serves as another authoritative recognition of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s management practices and the company’s sustainable business model.
In 2019, Ms. Lei Jufang, founder and then-chairperson of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, was honored with the inaugural Peter Drucker China Management Award for her commitment to practicing the concept of sustainable development in fields such as Tibetan medicine, for building a sustainability system that reflects the company’s unique characteristics, and for systematically fulfilling social responsibilities through industry practices.
