On October 12, a charity exhibition titled "Tangkas Protecting Life" kicked off in the corridor inside Exit 3 of Shanghai’s People’s Square Metro Station, accompanied by the hurried footsteps of commuters. Over 20 meters of continuous artwork vividly unveiled the breathtaking beauty of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the profound, intricate knowledge of Tibetan medicine, all beautifully depicted in exquisite tangkas. The bustling crowd couldn't help but be drawn in, stopping in an orderly fashion to take a closer look.
The classic theories of Tibetan medicine’s iconic thangka paintings are stepping down from the plateau and entering the bustling subway corridors of metropolitan cities, reaching out to the broad masses in inland regions and conveying Tibetan medicine’s profound vow to benefit all beings with boundless compassion. At this moment, the cultures of the plateau and the inland areas—the serene wisdom of ancient times and the lively hustle and bustle of everyday life—merge naturally together like a flowing stream, seamlessly blending into one.
If you’re unable to attend in person, there’s no need to feel disappointed. In fact, this special exhibition from the snowy plateau is a condensed version of the “Health Education Guide for Traveling to Tibet.” Themed around “Safeguarding Life,” this guide was specially prepared for those planning to visit Tibet. It’s the first-ever handbook that seamlessly combines the traditional Tibetan art of Thangka—recognized as an intangible cultural heritage—with practical health education resources tailored specifically for travelers heading to Tibet. The guide is now being distributed free of charge, both online and offline, on a long-term basis.
The Guide covers essential health knowledge, critical protective measures, emergency preparedness, and the natural landscapes, customs, and cultural traditions of Tibet—making it a veritable mini-encyclopedia. At the same time, it showcases the wisdom of Tibetan medicine, which embodies the harmony between humans and nature, and the life philosophy of the Himalayas that recognizes the animistic essence in all things. It also promotes the idea of mutual protection between humans and nature.
Look! The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau now has yet another friendly way to be explored and experienced up close.
Netizens纷纷 commented, “Office workers can’t wait to visit Tibet!” and “The ‘Tibet Exploration Guide’ also features exquisite thangka paintings by Qu Shui Danden, a representative inheritor of the Mönthang painting school—a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is such a wonderful resource worth downloading and collecting—please bring another dozen copies!!”...
It is reported that this public welfare initiative, “Tangka for Protecting Lives,” was launched by Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, a company from Tibet, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
The organizer, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, introduces: This public welfare initiative aims to establish a “two-way safeguard”: On the one hand, it seeks to protect the health of people traveling to Tibet through science-based guidelines; on the other hand, it also hopes that those who visit Tibet will join forces to protect the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau’s precious natural ecosystem and unique culture.
Interestingly, the “Tibet Exploration Science Guide” comes with built-in iteration capabilities. The first edition focuses on Route 318—the most popular route into Tibet—and the venue for this exhibition, People’s Square, happens to be the very starting point of Route 318. Going forward, the guide will expand to cover other routes into Tibet in successive versions—2.0, 3.0, and beyond—and will continue to be updated regularly, providing free, practical information on high-altitude health protection to an ever-growing audience.
In addition, the exhibition “Tangkas Protecting Life” is being held in various formats, first at the Chunxi Road Metro Station in Chengdu and then at the Basum Tso Scenic Area in Linzhi, Tibet. Meanwhile, friends in Shanghai are in for a treat—simply scan the QR code at Shanghai No.1 Pharmaceutical Huamei Pharmacy and Shanghai No.1 Pharmaceutical Fengyang Store to participate in an interactive lucky draw and have a chance to win physical Tangkas and protective pouches.
