The launch ceremony for the first National Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Award, co-sponsored by the Chinese Society for Ethnic Medicine and the China Association of Ethnic Medicine, was held in Beijing on April 14. This award is the only one in China’s ethnic medicine science and technology field that has been registered with the Office of National Science and Technology Awards. It represents the first-ever objective compilation, scientific evaluation, and comprehensive summary of research achievements across China’s ethnic medicine sectors—including medical care, education, research, and industry.
Xu Zhiren, President of the China Association for Ethnic Medicine, introduced that the preparatory launch event for the Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Awards has received high attention from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The first-ever Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Awards, modeled after the evaluation criteria of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, places great emphasis on the quality of scientific and technological innovation. A total of six awards are established, including the Natural Science Award, the Technological Invention Award, and the Science and Technology Progress Award. These awards aim to recognize individuals and groups that have made outstanding contributions in the field of ethnic medicine science and technology, to boost the enthusiasm and creativity of ethnic medicine researchers and practitioners, and to further promote innovative development in medical care, education, research, and industry related to ethnic medicine in China.
The review process, guided by the principles of openness, fairness, and impartiality, will be conducted through a three-stage blind review by experts and peer review. Currently, the Regulations on the National Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Awards and the Implementation Rules for the National Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Awards have been formulated. Letters have already been sent to relevant industry organizations in more than 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country, requesting their assistance in conducting eligibility reviews, preliminary assessments of award levels, and centralized compilation of results. It is expected that the list of winners will be announced in the third quarter of this year.
Lei Jufang, chairperson of Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd. and a representative of ethnic medicine enterprises, stated that this award can, on the one hand, guide the innovation direction of the ethnic medicine industry; on the other hand, through the award’s authoritative evaluation and demonstration of achievements, it can identify outstanding scientific and technological projects that are ready for industrialization and promote their widespread adoption. This integrated approach of industry, academia, and research will enhance the productivity of ethnic medicine enterprises. Moreover, the award will ensure that substantial investments in basic research receive adequate attention and encouragement, thereby attracting more social resources to the ethnic medicine industry.
