Not long ago, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine released its 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Report—the first CSR report ever published by a Tibetan medicine enterprise. As a leading company in the Tibetan medicine industry, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine presented in the report its CSR commitment system—“guided by core values, grounded in practical actions, and supported by robust mechanisms”—highlighting the unique social responsibilities that traditional ethnic medicine enterprises should shoulder. The report also underscored the importance of sustainable industrial development as well as cultural preservation and inheritance within the traditional ethnic medicine sector.
Since entering the field of Tibetan medicine, Lei Jufang, Chairwoman of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, has distilled a corporate culture system centered on the core values of “doing good for others and pursuing righteous paths and legitimate businesses,” building upon a deep understanding of Tibetan medical cultural wisdom and dedicated study. Over more than a decade of entrepreneurial practice, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has consistently regarded fulfilling its corporate social responsibility as its own mission. By systematically embracing social responsibility, the company seeks to exert the greatest possible positive impact on society, viewing the protection of spiritual values through practical enterprise as an inevitable choice for doing good and benefiting others.
Lead the industry and implement the fundamental concept of "Guangcai Poverty Alleviation."
In 1995, Lei Jufang joined a delegation of Chinese private enterprises on a visit to Tibet. It was there, in this land marked by material poverty yet rich in spiritual fulfillment, that she planted the very first seed of the Guangcai Cause in Tibet and founded her own enterprise. Over the past decade and more, led by Lei Jufang, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has leveraged its steadily accumulated industrial capabilities and solid foundations to become a leading enterprise in the Tibetan medicine sector, thereby driving the development of Tibet’s core pillar industries. A group of locally trained Tibetan professionals now occupy key positions, and many local employees—including a number of workers with disabilities—have found stable and fulfilling lives, fully embodying the fundamental philosophy and goals of the Guangcai Cause: “helping those in distress while balancing righteousness and profit.” In 2009, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine achieved total operating revenue of 469 million yuan. As of 2009, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine had cumulatively paid over 400 million yuan in taxes in Tibet. Qizheng Tibetan Medicine ranked 66th among China’s top 100 tax-paying private enterprises, and for eight consecutive years has been one of the largest taxpayers and an advanced enterprise in both the Tibet Autonomous Region and Lhasa City. Moreover, it ranks first among manufacturing enterprises in terms of tax payments.
In August 2009, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine successfully listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, earning recognition from the capital market as a modern inheritor of millennia-old Tibetan medicine. Through the development of the Tibetan medicine industry, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has achieved the fundamental goal of poverty alleviation and rural development via its "Guangcai" initiative. By implementing the Guangcai project in Tibet, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has spurred the growth of key local industries, generating stable fiscal revenue for the region and establishing itself as a pillar of the local economy.
Care for the roots and shoulder the responsibility of cultural heritage preservation.
When she chose the sites for the pharmaceutical factory and the natural Tibetan medicinal herb conservation base—Baiyi Town in Linzhi, Tibet, and Nanyi Gou in Milin—it was then that Lei Jufang first learned that this area was the famed “Gongbu Manlong” (meaning “the Island of Medicine”) in Tibetan medical history. It was here, 1,300 years ago, that Yutuo Yuandan Gongbu, revered as the founder of Tibetan medicine, established the very first degree-granting Tibetan medical college, training over a thousand medical doctors. From this very place, the origins of Tibetan medicine spread across the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Later, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine went on to discover here—instruments and tools used by Yutuo Yuandan Gongbu when he founded the Tibetan medical school 1,300 years ago, including medicinal grinding stones and other equipment... What kind of wisdom system is Tibetan medicine? And how has it been passed down through the snowy regions? What can contemporary medicine learn from it? For more than a decade, these have been the secrets that Lei Jufang, leading Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, has diligently explored and uncovered with her own feet across the snow-covered lands. Tibetan medicine is one of the representatives of traditional Chinese medicine and also an important component of global traditional medicine. The culture of Tibetan medicine is the soul of traditional Tibetan pharmacology; as an essential part of Tibetan culture, it can be regarded as a “genetic resource” of Eastern wisdom, enabling humanity to gain a deeper and broader understanding of life systems. With its uniquely valuable healthcare benefits for human physical and mental health, Tibetan medicine urgently needs vigorous preservation and inheritance. Cultural inheritance divorced from industry is like a very fine thread—easily broken if handled carelessly. But when the power of inheritance becomes a strong, robust rope, it can endure endlessly. Specialized industries serve as a crucial supporting force for this enduring inheritance. Deeply captivated by the charm of Tibetan medicine, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine strives to foster and strengthen these specialized industries, laying a solid foundation and providing powerful impetus for its continued传承.
At the same time, Lei Jufang came to a deeper realization that only the traditional Tibetan medicine industry—rooted in cultural heritage—can possess enduring vitality. Whether it’s about fostering industrial development, safeguarding human health, or preserving the world’s cultural diversity, inheritance represents an industry and social responsibility that any enterprise with a sense of mission must embrace. Thus, inheritance has become Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s commitment to taking responsibility after rational reflection on both history and the present reality.
In the very place where the flame of Tibetan medicine has long been passed down, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has established a public welfare school dedicated to traditional Tibetan medicine. Lei Jufang invited experts who are deeply committed to reviving Tibetan medical culture through traditional education to serve as principals. Today, the first cohort of students has already graduated, and their medical skills and ethical conduct have earned high praise from the people in the Tibetan areas. In particular, during the Yushu disaster relief efforts, graduates from the school played a pivotal role as the backbone of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s Glorious Rescue Team, leaving behind numerous heartwarming stories of medical excellence. The students feel proud to have the privilege of continuing and preserving the legacy of their ancestors. They marvel that “Qizheng’s noble gesture has planted a seed for the inheritance of Tibetan medicine, reinvigorating the ancient roots and vitality of this profound medical tradition.” They firmly believe that with the continuous cultivation and steady supply of students passionate about Tibetan medical culture, this rich and profound tradition will surely endure for generations to come.
Give back to society and fulfill our corporate social responsibility.
Lei Jufang believes that a well-managed enterprise, by choosing social issues that it is familiar with and that directly affect its own interests—and by devoting ample resources, deep expertise, and outstanding management skills to addressing these issues—can have a far greater positive impact on public welfare than any other institution or charitable organization. Over the years, Qizheng has been passionately committed to public welfare, embracing the "Guangcai" philosophy and investing in Tibetan areas to promote industrial and regional economic development. Through the establishment of the Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Foundation, Qizheng has adopted a strategic, sustainable approach, reinvesting a portion of its profits into cultural, educational, and medical public welfare initiatives in Tibetan regions and western China. From sporadic acts of kindness—such as donating to build roads and supporting orphans and people with disabilities—to active participation in the Guangcai Initiative, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has developed a sustained mechanism for assuming social responsibility. To date, Qizheng has cumulatively invested over 65 million yuan in public welfare projects—including healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation—in western China and Tibetan areas.
Before major disasters strike, Qizheng always feels it is its duty to actively participate in relief efforts. During the Wenchuan earthquake, Qizheng made six emergency donations of medicines and supplies worth a total of 7.24 million yuan to support the disaster-stricken areas. Following the Yushu earthquake on April 14, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine dispatched four successive small teams in a relay fashion over a period of 49 days, rotating shifts to station themselves in Yushu for rescue operations. In total, Qizheng donated materials and cash amounting to 5.09 million yuan and also planned funds to support the reconstruction of post-disaster medical facilities. The relief supplies and cash were donated through national disaster relief channels and distributed directly by rescue teams on the front lines, helping affected residents alleviate their suffering and overcome immediate hardships. Lei Jufang personally coordinated and closely monitored the entire relief effort. On August 8, when Zhouqu was struck by a massive flash flood and mudslide, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine immediately organized the delivery of instant food and drinking water directly to the disaster area to provide urgent assistance.
Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is fully committed to driving the development of its specialty industries by leveraging the company’s core competitive strengths. It diligently pursues a corporate development philosophy that uses industry to serve the nation and safeguards spiritual values through practical business endeavors. Qizheng Tibetan Medicine aspires to become a leader in the field of distinctive traditional medicine, ultimately growing into a long-lasting enterprise that is cherished by its employees, trusted by its customers, respected by society, and beneficial to its investors. This may well be the very “confidence” behind Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s decision to openly and honestly disclose its social responsibility system to the public—because it is precisely this social responsibility framework that is propelling the young Tibetan medicine enterprise forward, enabling the thriving development of this ancient traditional industry and benefiting all beings.
