The first National Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Awards were announced on November 24 in Chongqing. A total of 96 projects from across the country received honors, with the winning projects covering research achievements from 16 ethnic medicine systems, reflecting China's comprehensive accomplishments over the years in various areas such as basic research, cultural heritage preservation, technological innovation, and industrial development in the field of ethnic medicine. Among them, Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd. was awarded both the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and the First Prize for Innovation in the Ethnic Medicine Industry.
“We have three key insights into innovation in ethnic medicine,” said Mr. Liu Kai, Director and President of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine. “First, we must firmly uphold the traditional values of ethnic medicinal culture, highlight its unique cultural characteristics, and carry forward this ancient ethnic medical heritage. Second, we need to continuously leverage technological innovation—such as enhancing quality standards, innovating dosage forms, and conducting evidence-based medical research—to ensure that these time-honored ethnic medicines meet modern needs. Third, taking ethnic medicinal culture as our foundation, we should explore modern, specialized marketing approaches, using both brand marketing and academic marketing to create and commercialize the value of ethnic medicines.”
As a dual industry leader in both the Chinese Tibetan medicine market and the topical pain-relief sector, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has been committed for nearly two decades to driving the development of the Tibetan medicine industry through technological innovation. The company has achieved numerous industry firsts in the field of Tibetan medicine innovation. To date, the company holds 73 drug approval numbers, 9 exclusive product varieties, and 5 protected traditional Chinese medicine varieties, with a total of 110 patents. Additionally, the company has undertaken more than 40 national and local scientific research projects.
The National Award for Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology is the sole award in China’s ethnic medicine science and technology field, officially registered with the Office of National Science and Technology Awards. Co-sponsored by the Chinese Society for Ethnic Medicine and the China Association for Ethnic Medicine, this award aims to thoroughly implement the spirit of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China regarding “supporting the development of traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine,” summarize recent scientific and technological achievements in ethnic medicine, recognize collectives and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to ethnic medicine research and development, boost the enthusiasm and creativity of ethnic medicine researchers and practitioners, and foster and promote the development of the ethnic medicine industry. The award comprises six categories: the Natural Science Award, the Technological Invention Award, the Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, the Ethnic Medicine Industry Innovation Award, and the Ethnic Medicine Heritage Contribution Award.
Since its launch in June 2014, this award program has attracted widespread attention and active participation from scientific and technological researchers and experts in ethnic medicine across the country, involving more than a hundred institutions—including major ethnic universities, research institutes, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies—from over ten provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions.
China has long lacked a dedicated award specifically for the field of ethnic medicine. The establishment of the “Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Award” fills this gap and represents the most authoritative recognition in China’s ethnic medicine sector. It will undoubtedly have a profound impact on promoting research and industrial development in China’s ethnic medicine field. Furthermore, according to the “Regulations on the Awarding of the Ethnic Medicine Science and Technology Award,” the award is presented every two years, with the ceremony held in even-numbered years.
