On December 3, the 8th International Symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility Reports of Chinese Enterprises—hosted by WTO Economic Digest and the China Council for Sustainable Development Business, and co-organized by the Swedish Embassy in China and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ)—was held in Beijing. During the symposium, the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Reports” were officially released.
This assessment was conducted using the “Golden Bee Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting Assessment System (GBEE-CRAS2010),” pioneered in China by the WTO Economic Review. The assessment systematically evaluated and analyzed 1,755 out of 2,265 CSR reports released in mainland China during the first ten months of 2015, examining them across six dimensions: report readability, report innovation, structural integrity, report credibility, content substance, and performance comparability.
To enhance the fairness and transparency of the assessment, this round of evaluation—beyond the professional review conducted by the expert panel—has, for the first time, introduced a public review component. Nine public reviewers, selected through WeChat registration, evaluated the reports. After undergoing initial review, re-review, and verification, 62 corporate social responsibility reports ultimately stood out.
The social responsibility reports of 12 companies, including China North Industries Group Corporation, China Electronics Information Industry Development Institute Co., Ltd., Baosteel Group Co., Ltd., and China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company, have been awarded the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Leadership Enterprise” prize. According to the introduction, this award requires companies to be among the “Top 500 Chinese Enterprises.” The reports systematically disclose the companies’ implementation of CSR principles, practices, performance, and exemplary cases over the past year, fully reflecting industry characteristics and corporate uniqueness, and providing an excellent reading experience.
The reports of five companies, including Huayan Water Services (China) Co., Ltd., Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd., and Shenzhen Gas Group Co., Ltd., were honored with the "Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Growing Enterprises" award as exemplary representations of annual CSR reports by small and medium-sized enterprises.
Seven companies, including Ryan Real Estate Co., Ltd., Mary Kay (China) Cosmetics Co., Ltd., and Canon (China) Co., Ltd., have been awarded the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Foreign-Invested and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Enterprises” prize for their high-quality CSR reports. These reports systematically address the expectations and demands of various Chinese stakeholders, demonstrating a global perspective while remaining firmly grounded in China’s realities.
In the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Special Awards,” the reports of China National Machinery Industry Corporation, Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., and Guangxi Liugong Machinery Co., Ltd. received the Employee Special Award; the reports of CITIC Bank Corporation and Guizhou Power Grid Co., Ltd., which systematically disclosed information on customer engagement and responsibility, won the Customer Special Award; the reports of Beijing Holdings Co., Ltd. and China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., which highlighted corporate practices and performance in environmental management, pollution reduction and emission control, carbon management, and biodiversity conservation, were awarded the Environmental Special Award; as outstanding examples of disclosing community engagement information, the reports of China National Machinery Industry Corporation and China Travel Service (CITS) Group Co., Ltd. received the Social Special Award; the Supplier Special Award was presented to China Resources Beverage (China) Co., Ltd. and SanDisk Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
Innovation poses a significant challenge to enhancing report quality. An excellent annual innovation report exemplifies this by integrating innovative ideas throughout the report, reflecting those ideas and the company’s unique characteristics through an innovative structure, disclosing accountability information in innovative formats, and disseminating the report via innovative channels. China Minmetals Corporation was recognized for its innovative approach to communication, while Guangzhou Yuexiu Group Co., Ltd. earned the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Innovative Report” award for being the first in its industry to adopt the national reporting standards.
The reports of Chongqing Gas Group Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Metro Group Co., Ltd., as among the best in the first-ever Corporate Social Responsibility Reports released in 2015, were awarded the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Debut Report” prize.
The corporate social responsibility reports of 24 companies—including China Petrochemical Corporation, State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., Huawei Investment Holding Co., Ltd., China Mobile Communications Corporation, and Eaton (China) Investment Co., Ltd.—have been awarded the “Golden Bee 2015 Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report—Evergreen Award.” According to the organizers, this recognition indicates that these companies have established stable mechanisms for publishing CSR reports, and their report quality is at a high level, making them valuable references for other companies when preparing their own reports.
To promote the sustained development of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting by Chinese enterprises and to help them publish high-quality CSR reports that enhance the value of such reports, WTO Economic Digest has been publishing the “Golden Bee Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Report” for seven consecutive years. To date, it has evaluated over 8,000 CSR reports in total, with reports from more than 190 companies making the list at least once.
