On February 10, the China Network of the UN Global Compact released the "2014 Best Practice Cases of the UN Global Compact in China." Tibet Qizheng Tibetan Medicine Co., Ltd. was honored alongside a total of 25 multinational and large state-owned enterprises, including BASF, Nestlé, China National Petroleum Corporation, State Grid, Huawei, and HNA Group.
The UN Global Compact was officially launched at the United Nations Headquarters in 2000, calling on companies to adhere to ten core principles covering human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. It urges global businesses to embrace shared values and implement a comprehensive set of essential social norms. The China Network of the Global Compact is a regional network officially authorized by the UN Global Compact Organization to operate in China; it currently has 270 corporate members. Since 2012, the China Network has held an annual “China Best Practices Selection” to recognize outstanding enterprises that embody the spirit of the Global Compact, reflect distinctive Chinese corporate characteristics, and demonstrate significant social impact and promotional value.
As a small- and medium-sized enterprise in a western ethnic minority region dedicated to the modernization of Tibetan medicine, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine joined the United Nations Global Compact as early as 2004. Thanks to its practical explorations in promoting the development of the ethnic medicine industry and using long-term mechanisms to support Tibetan areas, it was selected as one of the “2013 Global Compact China Best Practice Cases.” In 2014, the company once again received this honor for its practices in “labor employment and rights protection,” demonstrating its foresight and proactive efforts on the path of social responsibility. In its introduction of the best practice cases, the Global Compact China Network stated: Developing enterprises in ethnic minority regions not only faces the challenge of a weak industrial foundation but also encounters significant obstacles such as a relative shortage of talent and linguistic and cultural barriers. By continuously driving technological innovation to maintain its competitive edge, fostering the integration of ethnicities and cultures, and actively cultivating talent, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has made valuable attempts to lay a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the enterprise.
At the awards ceremony that day, Ms. Feng Ping, Vice President and Board Secretary of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, delivered a speech as a corporate representative, highlighting several aspects of the company’s efforts to promote industrial advancement in ethnic regions and its practices in labor employment and protection of workers’ rights and interests.
In promoting industrial advancement: Qizheng Tibetan Medicine has introduced modern pharmaceutical concepts, technologies, and process equipment into ethnic regions, addressing common key technical challenges faced in Tibetan medicine production. This initiative is leading to an overall technological upgrade of the industry, enabling it to meet contemporary consumer demands. By standardizing and enhancing traditional Tibetan medicine quality standards in line with modern R&D requirements, conducting clinical validation using modern medical approaches, and actively exploring innovative marketing models for Tibetan medicine, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine is helping the Tibetan medicine industry enter the vast mainland market, thereby creating and commercializing value.
In terms of labor employment and rights protection: First, we continuously innovate to maintain our industrial advantages and corporate competitiveness, providing employees with stable employment opportunities. This is both the prerequisite and foundation for our company’s practice in labor employment and rights protection. As of 2013, the company achieved an operating revenue of 969 million yuan and paid 202 million yuan in taxes in the Tibet region, accumulating nearly 1 billion yuan in tax payments in Tibet, and employing a total of 1,452 people. Second, the company continually improves its mechanisms for attracting and nurturing talent, placing equal importance on developing and tapping into local talent as on attracting external talent. While achieving localization of talent, the company also adopts a combination of rotational postings from inland regions and local talent development to recruit key technical positions and senior management roles that are relatively difficult to fill in the Tibetan region. Furthermore, during recruitment, the company gives priority consideration to local residents. In 2013, the company had 246 employees from ethnic minority groups, and among the mid- and high-level management teams in the Tibet region, managers from local backgrounds accounted for over 90%. Third, the company regards employees as its greatest asset, consistently focusing on improving their quality of life and emphasizing spiritual respect for its employees. We provide a platform for ethnic minority employees to practice their cultural and religious beliefs and have incorporated traditional ethnic festivals into our employee benefits system.
Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s efforts and practices in labor employment and rights protection have received positive recognition and acclaim from all sectors of society. The company has successively been awarded titles such as “National Model Employee Home,” “National Model Enterprise for Harmonious Labor Relations,” and “Advanced Enterprise Dedicated to Caring for Employees and Achieving Win-Win Outcomes.” Some employees in the Tibetan region have been honored with awards including “Outstanding Employee Who Loves the Company” and “National Outstanding Knowledge-Based Employee.” Meanwhile, Ms. Lei Jufang, Chairperson of the company, has also been recognized with the honor of “Outstanding Private Entrepreneur Dedicated to Caring for Employees” for her leadership and commitment to the company’s efforts and contributions in labor employment and rights protection.
In addition, Ms. Feng Ping, Vice President and Board Secretary of Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, provided a systematic introduction to Tibetan medicine on the platform of social responsibility. As a result, attendees not only recognized and praised Qizheng Tibetan Medicine’s social responsibility initiatives but also gained a fresh understanding of Tibetan medicine and developed a keen interest in it, thus opening up a new platform for the promotion and exchange of Tibetan medicinal culture.
